Solid Wood
Birch
Birch is the workhorse of solid-wood vanities. It is a common hardwood that mainly grows in the temperate and colder regions of North America, Europe, and Asia — and although "hardwood" does not automatically mean the hardest wood, yellow birch measures roughly 1,260 lbf on the Janka scale, nearly as hard as oak and far above softwoods such as pine. It has a relatively hard surface with good bending, compression, and impact resistance, which is why it has long been used for furniture, cabinets, flooring, interior doors, and even tool handles.

Birch is usually creamy white, light yellow, or light brown, and some varieties carry a slight golden tone. Its grain is fine and even, without the highly visible, bold pattern found in oak, which gives it a clean and natural appearance that fits easily into modern, minimalist, or traditional interiors. That same fine surface is exactly why painted doors are so often birch: it takes paint, stain, and clear coating smoothly without the grain telegraphing through. It can keep its natural light-coloured look, be stained to imitate darker species, or be painted in colours such as white or black. And because birch is generally more affordable than premium hardwoods like cherry, walnut, or mahogany, it offers one of the best balances of appearance, durability, and cost on this list.

Seal the paint, edges, and joints properly, wipe up standing water, and a well-made birch vanity can provide many years of reliable use.
Oak
Oak is not a single tree species, and for a bathroom the distinction matters. In the North American market, the two most common types are white oak and red oak. White oak (Janka ~1,360 lbf) has a more neutral colour and internal vessels plugged with natural growths called tyloses — the same property that makes it the wood of choice for whisky barrels and traditional boat building. Water simply has a harder time getting in. Red oak (~1,290 lbf) is nearly as hard, but its pores are open; stand a short piece of red oak in water and you can literally blow bubbles through the end grain. If you want an oak vanity, specify white oak.

Visually, oak is the opposite of birch. Its colour ranges from light brown and greyish brown to reddish brown, with a relatively coarse grain, clearly visible growth rings, and distinctive natural patterns — a pronounced, layered appearance that highlights the character of real solid wood. It takes stain and clear protective finishes well, letting the grain stay visible in anything from a light natural tone to a deep espresso, and its strength and wear resistance suit cabinet doors, drawer fronts, and frames that see daily use.

The trade-offs: oak is relatively heavy, usually more expensive than engineered panels, and that same bold grain shows through paint — so if you want a perfectly smooth painted door, oak is the wrong species.
Pine
Pine is the budget solid wood, and it looks the part in the best sense. Common types include Eastern White Pine, Western Yellow Pine, Southern Yellow Pine, and Radiata Pine. The wood is creamy white to light brown, with clearly visible grain and growth rings and frequent natural knots — a warm, natural look that fits rustic, traditional, and farmhouse styles particularly well. It is light, easy to cut and machine, and accepts clear finishes, stains, and paint. Some species have relatively low shrinkage and hold their dimensions well after proper kiln drying.

Eastern White Pine measures around 380 lbf on the Janka scale — roughly a third the hardness of birch — and even the toughest Southern Yellow Pine tops out near 870 lbf. Expect dents, scratches, and dinged edges over years of daily use. Knots and resin pockets can affect how evenly stain takes and can bleed through light-coloured paint over time, so a stain-blocking primer over the knots is not optional. Pine works in a bathroom as long as the surface, knots, and cut edges are properly sealed — but it is a style choice more than a performance choice.

Walnut
Here is a number that surprises people: American Black Walnut, the most common walnut in the furniture market, measures about 1,010 lbf on the Janka scale — softer than birch and both oaks. You are not paying walnut prices (typically the highest of the common vanity hardwoods) for toughness. You are paying for the colour: heartwood from light brown to deep chocolate brown with purple, grey, or nearly black streaks, and a grain that is usually fine and straight but can turn wavy, curly, or irregular. Compared with oak's bold, coarse figure, walnut reads softer and deeper — modern, warm, and luxurious. It usually needs no stain at all; a clear protective finish is enough to bring out the natural color, and no stain on another species can quite fake it.

Two things to know before ordering. First, walnut sapwood is creamy white, so boards containing both heartwood and sapwood show strong colour contrast — some suppliers steam the lumber to even this out, some sell the contrast as a feature. Second, the heartwood has genuine natural decay resistance, a real asset in a humid room, though the wood still needs a complete finish and sealed edges like everything else on this list. And despite the price tag, remember it can still dent under a hard knock.
Engineered Wood
One spec applies to everything in this section before we get to the individual materials: formaldehyde emissions. In Canada, composite wood products should comply with the federal Formaldehyde Emissions from Composite Wood Products Regulations.
Plywood
Plywood is what quality cabinet boxes are typically built from. It is made by bonding multiple thin layers of wood veneer with adhesive under high temperature and pressure, with each layer's grain running perpendicular to the next — a structure known as cross-lamination. Natural solid wood is much stronger and more stable along the grain than across it; by alternating the grain direction of each layer, plywood makes the forces and wood movement in different directions restrain one another. The result is a panel that is strong for its weight, holds screws firmly, and is far less likely than a wide solid-wood board to crack, cup, or warp as humidity changes — which is exactly what you want in the side panels, bottoms, shelves, and frames of a bathroom vanity. When properly sealed, it also tends to tolerate brief accidental exposure to water better than MDF or particleboard, whose swelling is permanent.

"Plywood" is not one fixed specification or level of quality, though, and this is where buyers get burned. The internal veneers may be pine, birch, poplar, eucalyptus, or other species; the core may be veneer-core, MDF-core, particleboard-core, or combination-core; and the surface may carry a natural decorative veneer such as oak, walnut, or birch. Three things to check:
- Core type. Veneer-core — the traditional all-wood-layer construction used in high-quality furniture — beats MDF-core and particleboard-core for screw-holding and structural use, because continuous wood fibres run through the core and give hinges, drawer slides, and fasteners something solid to bite into. Many higher-quality vanity boxes use approximately 18 mm (3/4") veneer-core plywood for the main structural panels.
- Ply count. At 18 mm, standard sheets run 5–7 plies; Baltic-birch-style plywood runs around 13. More, thinner, well-bonded plies generally indicate a more uniform core — though veneer quality, adhesive quality, and internal voids matter just as much.
- Voids. Look at the exposed edge. Gaps in the core layers mean hinge and slide screws can land in air.
Because natural veneers can be applied to its face, a plywood cabinet can carry the look of real oak, walnut, or birch at a fraction of the cost of building the same cabinet from wide solid-wood panels — with better dimensional stability as a bonus. Its weakness is the edges and cutouts: even with water-resistant adhesive, the wood veneers themselves absorb moisture, so any unsealed edge, sink cutout, plumbing opening, screw hole, or joint is a path for water. Prolonged exposure there causes edge swelling, warping, veneer bubbling, or delamination between layers. The most common failure we hear about from customers replacing an old vanity is a sink cutout that was never sealed at the factory — invisible on delivery day, doing its damage quietly over the following years. So when you evaluate a plywood vanity, check the core structure, thickness, and ply count, and then check that every edge, bottom surface, and cutout has actually been sealed.
MDF
MDF, short for Medium-Density Fiberboard (600–800 kg/m³), is made by combining fine wood fibres with resin, wax, and other additives, then compressing the mixture under high temperature and pressure. Unlike plywood's layered veneers, the fibres are distributed evenly throughout, so the panel has no knots, pores, growth rings, or grain direction at all. That uniform structure is MDF's main advantage: the surface is glass-smooth and the thickness dead consistent, and a CNC machine can cut Shaker profiles, grooves, curved edges, and complex decorative details into it with smooth, consistent edges that are difficult to achieve as economically in solid wood. It suits nearly any decorative finish — solid-colour paint, high-gloss, matte, film-wrapped, wood veneer, or laminate — which is why MDF is so widely used for painted vanity doors, including white, black, and grey Shaker-style doors. Painted MDF also will not develop the hairline cracks at panel joints that painted solid-wood doors can show after a few winters of humidity swings, and it has none of the internal core voids sometimes found in plywood; properly made high-density MDF holds hinges, drawer slides, and standard fasteners adequately, though it is heavier than plywood and its edges need care when screwing.

Its main limitation is water. Raw MDF edges drink moisture, and the resulting thickness swelling is permanent — no amount of drying flattens it back out. The vulnerable spots are exposed edges, plumbing openings, the bottom edges of doors where drips collect, and anywhere the painted finish gets chipped. For bathrooms, look for clearly labelled moisture-resistant (MR) MDF, which uses modified resin formulations for better stability in humid environments (though it is still not waterproof). Some manufacturers identify it with a green-dyed core, but colour coding varies between producers, so confirm the actual product specification rather than relying on colour alone. Just as important is complete sealing — interior, exterior, back, bottom, every edge, and any hole drilled on site. On well-made doors, that means primer and paint on all six sides, including the surfaces you never see.
HDF
HDF, short for High-Density Fiberboard, follows the same recipe as MDF — fine wood fibres, resin, wax, heat, and pressure — but pressed to a higher density; in the European market, anything above roughly 800 kg/m³. The highly compressed fibres give it a very fine, hard, smooth surface with clean, sharply defined edges and grooves, and it takes painted, film-wrapped, veneered, and laminate finishes well. Compared with standard MDF, good HDF is stiffer and more dent-resistant at the same thickness, which is why it shows up mostly as cabinet back panels, drawer bottoms, door skins, and other thin components rather than full doors — it is also heavier than both standard MDF and most plywood.
One caution on the name: the definition of HDF is not consistent across markets. In North America, the same panel may be sold as "high-density MDF," while some thin high-density boards actually fall into the hardboard category — so judge by the stated density and specification, not the label. And high density does not mean waterproof: the fibres still absorb moisture around unsealed edges, plumbing openings, screw holes, and damaged paint, so the front, back, bottom, and every edge and cutout should be fully sealed.
Particleboard
Particleboard is made by combining wood particles, shavings, and sawdust with resin, then compressing the mixture under high temperature and pressure — which makes it both the most affordable panel here and one of the most resource-efficient, since it turns wood-processing by-products into usable material instead of requiring large pieces of defect-free lumber. Furniture-grade board has a layered construction: finer particles on the faces create a smooth surface for decorative finishes, while coarser particles in the core provide thickness and basic strength. The surface is then covered with melamine, laminate, PVC film, natural wood veneer, or a printed wood-grain finish, which lets manufacturers offer white, black, grey, oak-look, walnut-look, and many other appearances at a consistent quality across production batches — and the finish itself adds wear resistance, stain resistance, and easy everyday cleaning. Because the core has no knots, colour variation, or grain direction, the panels stay flat and dimensionally consistent under normal dry indoor conditions.

Particleboard is a practical option for budget-conscious buyers, especially when it is protected by a durable surface finish and complete edge banding. Properly made high-density board has enough internal bond strength and screw-holding ability for standard hinges, drawer slides, and cabinet connectors. It does not match plywood's screw-holding strength or resistance to water damage — its particle structure is coarser and less uniform than MDF's, edges can chip or strip with impact or repeated hardware adjustment, and water absorption causes swelling that loosens the internal particles and does not reverse. But in a properly ventilated bathroom, with intact edge banding and no standing water left around the sink, a well-made particleboard vanity can serve reliably for years at a price the other materials cannot touch. The key is inspection and habits: check that the edge banding is complete and undamaged, make sure plumbing cutouts are sealed, and treat any bubbling at the edges as an early warning rather than a cosmetic issue.
FAQ
Is MDF or plywood better for a bathroom vanity? Different jobs. Plywood suits the cabinet box and anything structural; moisture-resistant MDF suits painted doors. Many well-built painted vanities combine a plywood box with MDF doors, because each material is used where its properties are most useful.
Is a solid wood vanity worth the extra cost? If you value stronger construction and long-term durability, yes. Even with a painted finish that hides the wood grain, solid wood and plywood components can provide a more substantial cabinet. If budget matters more, a well-made MDF vanity is still a practical choice.
How can I tell good plywood from bad in a showroom? Look at an exposed or drilled edge: count the plies (more and thinner is better) and check for voids in the core. Then open a door and check whether the sink cutout under the counter is sealed. That thirty-second inspection tells you more than the brochure will.
What actually makes vanities fail? From what we see when customers come in to replace an old vanity, it is rarely the panel material itself. It is unsealed cutouts, unfinished door bottoms, and standing water left at the sink rim. Material choice decides how fast the damage spreads; sealing and habits decide whether it starts.
Which Material Should You Choose?
There is no single best material — the right build depends on your budget, your style, and how hard the bathroom gets used. If you want real stained wood, white oak is one of the safer choices for a humid room and walnut the most distinctive, with birch covering both painted and stained styles for less. If you want a smooth painted Shaker door, moisture-resistant MDF is usually the more practical choice than solid wood. For the cabinet box, veneer-core plywood is the benchmark, while particleboard offers the lowest entry price — just pay particular attention to edge banding, plumbing cutouts, and keeping standing water off the cabinet.
And whatever you choose, remember the one rule that applies to all of them: none is waterproof. A well-sealed vanity in a modest material will outlast a poorly sealed one in premium wood — so judge a vanity by its edges, cutouts, and finish, not just the species on the label.
